The Strategic Alliance between NYK and BHP for Decarbonization of Maritime Transport: Innovations in Ammonia and Biofuels

In a significant step towards decarbonizing the maritime transport sector, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) and the BHP Group have renewed their strategic Memorandum of Understanding, initially signed in June 2022. This renewed collaboration, signed on November 25, 2025, reflects a shared commitment to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable and secure maritime transport.

Strategic Reinforcement: A High-Impact Collaboration Model

The collaboration between NYK, a prominent shipowner, and BHP, one of the world’s largest dry bulk cargo charterers, establishes a powerful bilateral model to drive technological and operational change in the supply chain. This approach is particularly relevant for the transportation of difficult-to-decarbonize commodities such as iron ore, coal, and copper. Emma Roberts, Vice President of Maritime Excellence and Supply Chain at BHP, commented on this renewal: “We share a common commitment to innovation and accelerating performance in safety, technology, and sustainability in the maritime sector. As one of the world’s largest dry bulk cargo charterers, BHP has a deep interest in working alongside our partners to advance a safer, technology-driven, and efficient shipping industry.”

The renewal of this memorandum not only solidifies this strategic partnership but also reinforces the leadership of both companies in the transition towards a more sustainable future for the maritime industry.

Next-Generation Fuels: Focus on Ammonia and Biofuels

The updated Memorandum of Understanding highlights initiatives focused on advancing the marine fuels industry and advanced vessel technology. One of the key initiatives is the ongoing joint research on dual-fuel ammonia vessels. Ammonia is a zero-carbon fuel candidate that does not produce CO2 when burned, making it an ideal solution for dry cargo shipping, especially on routes like Australia-China. Involvement in the ammonia bunkering sphere represents a long-term vision towards a net-zero solution, recognizing that significant safety protocols and bunkering infrastructure will be required. This forward-thinking stance is complemented by the immediate use of biofuels as a transitional measure to reduce current greenhouse gas emissions. The partnership underscores a dual-track strategy: immediate reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through market-available biofuels and long-term structural decarbonization through ammonia technology development.

Prioritizing Safety in Dry Cargo Operations

Beyond new fuels, a central component of the renewed agreement is the focus on improving operational safety. NYK Line’s expertise in the technical handling and high-quality tonnage of vessels is leveraged for dry cargo maritime transport. With the introduction of complex high-pressure equipment for new fuels like ammonia and navigating through increasingly stringent environmental and operational regulations, a robust safety framework is paramount. NYK will provide high-quality vessel tonnage to ensure that new technologies are deployed on ships meeting the highest standards of structural and operational integrity. Hiroaki Nishiyama, Executive Director of NYK Line, stated: “Amidst an uncertain environmental regulatory landscape, we will combine the strengths of both companies to accelerate the development of next-generation environmental technologies and consistently advance towards our goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.”

About BHP

BHP is a global resources leader based in Melbourne, Australia, with a broad portfolio spanning from iron ore to copper, coal, oil, and gas. As one of the world’s largest dry bulk cargo charterers, BHP’s commitment to maritime decarbonization is a strong market signal. Its Scope 3 emissions (including emissions from chartered maritime transport) are significant, making partnerships like this critical to achieving its aspirational goal of net-zero Scope 3 emissions by 2050. BHP actively participates in green maritime transport initiatives, including serving as a founding member of the Maritime Decarbonization Center in Singapore, emphasizing its role in supporting the adoption of low to zero greenhouse gas emissions fuels.
