Under the STCW Convention, the fitter is part of the engine department and carries out maintenance and repair tasks on the ship's mechanical equipment, under the supervision of the Chief Engineer. The 4+1/-1 rotation means approximately 120 days on board and 30 days of vacation, although the exact conditions should be confirmed with the crewing company. Candidates are advised to verify the specific requirements and contractual terms directly with the shipowner or agency.
